How to Type Special Characters Using Your ALT Key on Windows

Sometimes you need to use a symbol that just isn’t on your keyboard — maybe a currency sign like the Euro or Yen, or even something more unique. Luckily, on any Windows PC, you can easily access these symbols by using the ALT key and a numeric code. Here’s how to do it.

How to Use ALT Codes

To enter a special symbol, just follow these steps:

  1. Hold the left ALT key.
  2. Type the number for the symbol you need using the number pad (not the numbers along the top row of your keyboard).
  3. Release the ALT key, and the symbol will appear.

Here are a few useful symbols and their corresponding codes:

  • Alt + 156 = £ (Pound)
  • Alt + 0128 = € (Euro)
  • Alt + 0162 = ¢ (Cent)
  • Alt + 0165 = ¥ (Yen)
  • Alt + 0176 = ° (Degree)
  • Alt + 0135 = ‡ (Double Dagger)
  • Alt + 0247 = ÷ (Division Sign)

Using ALT Codes on Laptops

If you’re on a laptop, it’s a bit different since there usually isn’t a dedicated number pad. Instead, you’ll find the number pad integrated into the main keyboard, typically highlighted in blue. To use it:

  1. Hold both the ALT key and the ‘Fn’ key (usually found at the bottom left of the keyboard).
  2. Type the number using the integrated number pad, which might involve keys like ‘j’, ‘i’, and ‘o’ for numbers.
  3. Let go of both keys, and the symbol will appear.

For example, to type the Pound symbol (£) on a laptop, you’d:

  • Hold ALT + Fn
  • Type 156 (usually on the ‘j’, ‘i’, ‘o’ keys)
  • Release ALT + Fn
