0x00000051 after Windows 2003 SP1 upgrade

We recently had a client who applied Windows 2003 Server Service Pack 1 on their Dell Poweredge 420SC server. On reboot, they were greeted with the dreaded blue screen of death (BSOD) with the error message.

The server would then reboot and then do it all again. Safe mode and Last Known good configuration made no difference.

After searching the net, it turns out that this is a known problem on older Dell Poweredges that have had a factory install of Windows on.

There you can download a fix that you apply after booting from the Windows 2003 Server CD. You then press F6 to add your disk controller drivers and the Dell fix.

For some strange reason, the Windows Server setup program would not poll both floppies - it accepted either the drivers OR the Dell fix. Reinserting different disks just caused it to display the contents of the first disk and then complain about missing files.
In the end, I managed to get it working by using one disk - Firstly I added the Dell fix as per the instructions, then I removed the disk and deleted the files on another PC, added the RAID drivers and stuck it back in. It then thankfully repolled the floppy. I have no idea why that worked and two floppy disks didn't but I was happy it did.

This blog was a huge help. Thank you very much. Rocco
