CTRL+ALT+SHIFT?

I don't like simply reposting stuff any source, never mind one as popular as Slashdot, but this one caught me by surprise as I've used Windows for many years. A wonderful tip by nmb3000 as a comment to an article. I'd never heard of it before.

He outlines that rather than killing explorer.exe if you have a problem with it, it can be cleanly shutdown via the following combination.

  • Click Start -> Shutdown with the mouse.
  • Then whilst keeping your fingers on CTRL + ALT + SHIFT, press the Cancel button on the Shutdown dialog box.

According to nmb3000, "This method was designed for people writing plugins and handlers for Explorer who needed to be able to unload it all and start fresh without rebooting or uncleanly killing Explorer's process. Can be nice to know."

Yes, it could :)
